Women in Tech, the power of storytelling, anticipatory design and other UX links this weekWhat's hot in UX this week:
Overcoming the challenges of being a woman in Tech →With men comprising a high percentage of those in the tech space, it can be difficult as a woman trying to compete. Even tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Twitter have extremely low numbers of women in their tech roles. This article covers the major challenges that women face in tech, and avenues and advice from experts to address and potentially overcome those challenges. Diversity is a business no-brainer →It's more than obvious that diversity is not just an HR topic, it's a reflection of culture which influences how we live, how we communicate, what we need, which in turn influences the work we do as agents between our clients and the people they want to reach. Imagine what would happen if everyone at an agency thought and acted the same way? As an agency expected to deliver innovation, we cannot create innovative work if our teams are homogeneous. Nurturing diversity at work and in your work →Homogeneity is not normal. But we've been conditioned toward homogeneity and non-diversity over the decades by media, exacerbated in 2016 with Fox News crowned the most watched cable network and their all-white men prime time line-up. By pop culture and its lack of diversity in TV, movies, magazines and books. And even down to education design with text books. This has a dramatic effect on our behaviors, intentional and conscious or not. We live in a world where people with prominent Afrocentric features received longer criminal sentences because of how they look. Where white kids are more likely to be prescribed painkillers than black kids. And where even preschool teachers are conditioned to look to the black students for disruptive behavior. What makes a design seem "intuitive"? → In a recent usability test, Jared M. Spool witnessed something he had seen a hundred times before: a frustrated user claiming he knows exactly what is wrong with the interface, claiming that "these guys need to make this thing more intuitive". How Sketch is helping me get back into code → Just as university was able to introduce me to HCD and how to implement its practices into my workflow, so did Sketch in solidifying code as a skill I wanted to further explore. If someone asked you to think of a company that offers the ability to rent someone's home when when you travel instead of staying in a hotel, which is the first one you would name? Most of us are not Great Designers, especially me. Maybe there are some Great Designers out there. I can only speak for myself and why I'm not one of them. Designing culture: creating design-aware organizations → Design is becoming inextricably linked with the creation of products and services, especially within technology, as John Maeda's annual design in tech report highlights. Balancing aesthetic and usability in interface design → I've always been obsessed with designing a beautiful product, however, balanced with a good usability. Every time we craft an interface, we should always put a reason that is more than just nice and beautiful. Don't be a creep with anticipatory design → When you're in the business of anticipating or even predicting human behavior, you're bound to make a mistake at times. It is difficult to always be right on the money when it comes to predicting what they might want or do. News & Ideas
Tools & Resources
A year ago…UX Tools for every step in your design process → What are the UX tools you use to materialize and communicate your design ideas? What are the best tools for wireframing, prototyping, user testing, or simply just managing your design activities? We usually prefer tools that are inexpensive (ok, everyone does), that do not require software installation (browser-based tools) and that provide us with a good user experience when we're projecting experiences for other people. After all, that's how we spend a big part of our day. Brought to you by your friends at uxdesign.cc Like the links? Share the love ♥ |
